Volodymyr Vakulenko-K. (Author), Vanessa Darel (Illustrator), Denzil Darel (Translator and author of Yoga books) have joined forces to present an interesting array of Ukrainian fairy tales. It is refreshing to encounter light subject from the Ukraine with all the tension that seems to anchor relations with this country! In addition to being a fine collection of stories it emphasizes the fact that no matter what the condition of the world politic, children’s stories are often the unifying force.

The book is brief (32 pages) and the stories - SAINT MYKOLAI COMES WiTH PEACE, WIZARD, PROUD CHRISTMAS ... [ Показати всю рецензію ] TREE, IRIDISCENT CHAMELEON, CHILDREN OF THE YEAR, NAUGHTY NASTUSIA, and FAMILY OF SUN - are likewise brief. Read a few and the significance of the title of this collection becomes apparent!

Each of these stories is tainted with the presence of war and its impact on life in the Ukraine. Not every tale focuses on the invaders or the consequences of solders and their needs. Some of the stories ring with imagination of fantasy: From IRIDISCENT CHAMELEON - ‘You might ask, kids, what happened to Chameleon? He lives now in the places of which he solicited the angel. A small chameleon can fit in a man’s palm. And you know, his long tongue is not a burden for him. Instead, thanks to many bones in his tongue and its length, the emperor of lizards is successful in hunting. Wind told me this story, I listened to him attentively and now I am telling it word in word.
